Understanding the lymphatic system after cancer treatment
The lymphatic system is a network throughout your body that helps remove excess fluid, proteins, and waste from tissues while supporting your immune system.
During cancer treatment, this system may be affected by:

- Surgical changes to tissues
- Radiation therapy
- Changes in mobility during recovery
When lymphatic pathways are disrupted, fluid may not move as efficiently, which can contribute to swelling and tissue changes.

Which cancers can affect lymphatic health?
Lymphatic changes can occur after treatment for many different cancers, especially when lymph nodes or lymphatic pathways are involved.
Breast cancer
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
Treatments such as:
- Lumpectomy
- Mastectomy
- Lymph node removal
- Radiation therapy
- Breast reconstruction, including DIEP flap reconstruction
may affect lymphatic flow and can contribute to symptoms such as arm or breast swelling, tightness, discomfort, or changes in mobility.
Colorectal cancer (colon and rectal cancer)
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide.
Surgery involving the abdomen or pelvis may include removal of lymph nodes and can create changes in the tissues.
Some survivors may experience:
- Abdominal or pelvic tightness
- Scar tissue restrictions
- Changes in sensation
- Reduced mobility during recovery
Supporting tissue mobility, movement, and overall recovery can be an important part of rehabilitation.
Gynecological cancers
Cancers such as cervical, ovarian, and endometrial cancer may require surgeries involving pelvic lymph nodes.
When pelvic lymphatic pathways are affected, some women may develop lower extremity lymphedema, which can cause:
- Leg swelling
- Heaviness
- Discomfort
- Difficulty walking or exercising
Lung cancer
Lung cancer treatments may also involve lymph nodes, surgery, or radiation.
Although lymphatic symptoms may look different depending on the treatment approach, cancer rehabilitation can help address changes in strength, mobility, breathing, and overall function.
How can Manual Lymphatic Drainage help?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized hands-on technique designed to support lymphatic movement.
Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light, rhythmic movements that follow the pathways of the lymphatic system.

Early Phase (0–5 days)
The body prioritizes inflammation control and protection. Swelling, pain, and limited movement are expected.
Proliferative Phase (Day 5–Week 2)
The body produces large amounts of collagen to repair tissue.
During this phase:
This is often when patients notice that symptoms temporarily feel worse, even though healing is progressing normally.
Remodeling Phase (Week 2–6 and beyond)
Collagen begins reorganizing based on movement and mechanical load.
At this stage:
